I have been using aspbanner v8 for a while and now I noticed that, everyday, from 0:10 AM to 1:00 AM, the program stops working. At 1:00 AM all gets back to normal. I observed for more than a month and it happens everyday.
I called my host to ask if they were doing something at that time that could cause it and they said no. In fact, all other .asp pages of the site continue working well at this time, only the banners stop.
Is there a reason for this to happen? If it is some kind of maintenance, can we change the time for 4AM to 5AM? How?
Thanks in advance

Hello,
There is no sort of period on aspbanner when things stop working. I really have no idea what is going on. I also have no idea what 0.10 AM is ? In the world I live in that is not a valid time ? Did you type that wrong ?
0:10 AM to 1:00 AM ??? can we change the time for 4AM to 5AM ???
I am sorry, but I dont understand any of that the way your explaining it..
How about explaining this all a little better and in more detail. The more you tell me the better and that means everything from server OS to database type to banner calling method.. how busy your site is, aspbanner settings, your connection string, and exactly what doesn't work means.. etc etc etc
thx

Hi Chris, let me explain better...
What happens is that every night, from midnight until one o'clock in the morning, exactly for one hour, no banner is loaded by aspbanner to my website.
If I visit the site at this time of the night, all the banners that should be being shown, just don't appear, living only empty areas where the banners should be. It only happens at that time. All the rest of the day it works normally.
I use iframe method and javascript method and it happens with both methods. It is like if the program stops loading banners everynight for a one hour rest...
As my webhost says they don't do nothing at that time, I decided to ask you if it is a normal procedure of aspbanner. If it is not, I can argue with them.
My site receives less than 200.000 unique visitors a month. Below, the number of pageviews of aspbanner last month:
- injectbanner.asp: 921,989 - aspbanner_inc: 373,394 - banner_redirect: 6,052
Thanks again,
Roberto.

OK,
Well, I would say there is definetely something going on. No one has ever mentioned anything remotely like this in all the years I have sold this product .ASPBanner does nothing at certain time periods like that especially if just happens at the same time every night. It simply has to be the server or something they are doing. Though honestly I cant think of anything that would do that ??? Chances are arguing with them about it will be useless.
If you do end up needing a better host I like www.alentus.com for ASP hosting. They cant be beat for ASP support and they know their sh*t.

That being said you are from brazil right ? Perhaps the regional setting of the server has something to do with the aspbanner behavior as I imagine your hosted on a server with your regional settings ?
Then again I hust dont see how or know what it could be... it's real weird. There is just no time period when aspbanner is not supposed to serve banners.

Hi Chris,
Yes, I am from Brasil and my site is hosted here at www.dominal.com .
After complaining a lot with them, someone there took a look at the program files and discovered that doing some changes at the file aspbanner_inc.asp the banners went back to work at that period of time but, as they were afraid the changes could affect other functions of aspbanner, they put back the original aspbanner_inc.asp file and saved new one so I could test it.
So I waited until banners stoped working on the next day and uploaded the new file and the banners came back to work!
The problem is... Will the changes affect other functions? I asked them to tell me exactly what lines did they change but still had no answer. If I post the code here, can you take a look and find out what they changed and if it will affect other functions?
Thanks again for your help...

Seems they modded it so ASPBanner does its hourly update ever 5 hours instead of every hour.
Normally every hour it rearranges banner rotation and removes expired banners.. or banners that had their impression limit hit... etc etc
I guess that change made that weird issue you had change...
If you can live with it... go with it... I dont see how its gonna effect anything except that things wont get checked as often
I really dont have a great answer for you except try it for a while..

No, I am wrong..
Its hard to tell what they did as its a lot ofcode to look at.
Anyway, now that I look at it more it looks like they made it so it does those checks and rearranges banners every single time a banner it loaded. Except at 5 am..
?????
I dont know... if thats what they did it's goofy.. the database is getting hammered big time with queires and your banner rotations/weights will be totally off cause they never get to run their course
Whoever did those changes knew enough about ASP code to effectively change how it works but ultimately their understanding of what they were really doing was flawed and they may or may not realize what it will effect.
They also intruduced a bug by removing a small bug fix I had in there.
I wouldn't use that code.

ultimately this may have something to do with the way brazilian regional settings report back the hour of midnight ???
The next time its that time period.. put this code in and asp page.. run it and tell me what it says
(<% Response.Write (Hour(time)) %>)
Also.. try it during a few other time periods and let me know what the value is

Hi Chris,
The host support told me what they changed on the code:
line 15: from BannerZone ='Request('BannerZone') to BannerZone =
6'Request('BannerZone')
line 31: from Cint(Hour(time))
to Cint(Hour(5))
Can you tell if theese changes may affect any other functions or may I use the new file?
The code you sent on your last post is to be put in any asp page?
Thanks again, Roberto.

yes, they will effect all sorts of things and cause a lot of problems..
BIG TIME PROBLEMS
They are hard coding the bannerzone to 6 meaning you can only call banners from zone 6.
They also made changes they didnt tell you about that I saw.
Dont use the changes they made.

HI Chris, here I am again asking your help...
It seems that my host support could fix the problem of banners "no show" from 0 AM to 1 AM only by changing the line 31 of the code...
- from: If Cint(Application("BannersLastUpdated")) <> Cint(Hour(time)) Then
- to: If Cint(Application("BannersLatUpdated")) <> Cint(5) Then 'Cint(Hour(now())) Then
I uploaded the new code and it worked well in the period of time it usually does not. I tested all the zones and the banners were there and exposures and clicks were being recorded.
Do you think this only change can be harmfull? Or may I keep it running?
Thanks for your attention!
